Second Act

“Tim Lancaster’s party?” Maggie echoed when Lara asked first thing on Monday morning. “I think it’s his birthday.” She and Lara were coming up the front steps of the school on their way to class. “And as you probably already predicted, he throws a big party every year. And everyone who’s anyone comes along.”

“Of course they do.” Lara rolled her eyes.

“Why? Did they invite you?” Maggie wanted to know.

“I think it’s been assumed that everyone on the play’s cast and crew is invited,” she replied.

“And…you were actually considering to go?” Maggie prompted with a funny look on her face.

Lara huffed in ridicule. “What? Of course not,” she said. “It’s like a movie is what it is—a bunch of stereotypical people engaging in stereotypical behavior. Sure as heck wouldn’t want to miss out on that.”

Maggie stopped short from her laughter, blinking in surprise as she looked past Lara’s shoulder. “Speaking of stereotypes,” she said, motioning ahead.

Zane Hunter was leaning against the side of the front double doors of the school, having a “friendly” chat with a few bouncy sophomores. Then for some reason, he straightened up when he saw Lara and Maggie approaching and excused himself from his groupies.

“Hi,” Zane greeted as he met up with them.

Lara and Maggie both looked up. Lara imagined it must have looked like a seriously strange scene of Zane giving them both a disarming smile, while both girls gawked at him with peculiar disbelief.

Nothing like this had ever happened before.

Lara spoke first. “What the hell are you doing?” She shot him a strange look. Students in the area were already looking on with obvious curiosity.

Zane put out his hand. “Hi, Lara’s friend, I’m Zane Hunter.”

Maggie nodded. “Sure, of course. I’m—Maggie,” she replied, almost forgetting what to say.

“Maggie, great,” Zane started. “I need your help—”

Lara was just staring at him in continued disbelief. “Uh, no, you don’t.”

But Zane went on. “Surely you would know what the trick is to having a normal conversation with your friend here,” he said, casting a glance back at Lara. “She’s pretty good at shutting down conversation starters.”

Maggie looked over at Lara, looking at a loss for words, but amused nonetheless.

“That’s only because he’s pretty good at starting pointless conversations,” Lara interjected, making Maggie laugh.

But Zane just grinned before he held something out to Lara, seemingly from nowhere. “Here.”

Lara blinked. It was a book bag. But still, she asked, “What’s that?”

“For you,” he said.

“Wh—,” Lara had only begun to pronounce the word when Zane interrupted.

“Why?” he guessed. “I figured it would help you make less of a mess the next time you’re knocked over in the halls,” he replied with a shrug.

The girls exchanged strange looks. Lara didn’t quite know what to say now.

Did he bully it off some freshman? Was it from “lost and found”? Did it have a dead rat inside it? Then she noticed that the label tag was still on it. She didn’t have much cash handy. Was he expecting to be reimbursed?

For a split second,
